Will Archer hit the target?

I haven’t seen anything about this on any of the other COBRAS blogs, which probably means they announced it months ago and I’m pretty far behind. In any case, FX has a new animated spy series debuting this January, Archer. EDIT: I was right — Bish covered it over at Bish’s Beat with a nifty looking image of all of the characters, and a write-up of the show’s premise.

I’m a little excited about the series because its creator, Adam Reed, has a pretty decent track record with two shows for Cartoon Network, SeaLab 2021, which was one of the first and best Adult Swim shows, and Frisky Dingo, which they unfortunately don’t show regularly enough for me to keep up with the ever-complicated plotline. The voice of superspy Sterling Archer is provided by H. Jon Benjamin, best known (to me) as Coach John McGuirk on Home Movies — another of the all-time great cartoon series.

A handful of promos have found their way onto YouTube:

Others can be found at the FXArcher YouTube userpage, and most are not safe for work (be forewarned!) My reaction to the promos is a bit lukewarm — a few laughs here and there, but not up to the surreal level of humor I’ve come to expect from these creators.

We’ll see how the series looks, though when it debuts on FX January 14 of next year.

I knew one of you guys was bound to have covered this, and it was more than likely you! I just didn’t search hard enough — I’ll update the original post!

I covered it back in September, too, here:

I wish I’d actually watched that preview episode after blogging about it, though! I’m certainly curious. Rarely do these shows hit the mark, but there’s certainly room in the marketplace for an adult animated spy parody, so long as it’s actually funny!
